Story

Get to Know Us

Sustainable Shelves was first conceived about 15 years ago, as a secondhand bookstore. Over time, it's evolved into so much more than that - an eventual locus of community, a third space, an active member of the neighborhood, and a place for people to safely explore different perspectives, cultures - even worlds, if you're a sci-fi fan! Aside from the main goal of getting books into the hands of people who need and want them, we also hope to achieve regular upcycling and low-waste workshops for a variety of ages, wellness workshops that otherwise may not be accessible, and whatever else we can dream up!

Storefront

We source secondhand books locally through Friends of the Library, thrift stores, donations, and buying from people like you! If you have books to sell, reach out to use!

Community

Books that are not quite in a sellable condition get routed through back to the community. Got a kind of beat up copy of a current read? We'll donate these to individuals, Little Free Libraries, our literacy program partners, and so on.

Upcycling

That book or magazine has run its race. Maybe it's missing pages, has water damage, the dog ate it - we don't know, and we don't care. We'll take these and put them into our upcycling program for our workshops, all while creating as little waste as possible.
